Volcanic rock sculptures (J.Camarlinghi)Cordillera Real is the main portion of the northeaster Bolivian Andes, 6 of the 13 highest peaks of the country are located in this mountain range. Cordillera Real is highly appreciated by mountaineers and visitors, not only for the elevation and beauty of its mountains, but also for the accessibility. In fact, Potosi and Illimani mountains are an impressive first sight for visitors arriving to La Paz.

Due to intensive agricultural and mining activities, many roads were built in this area making most of the mountains incredibly accessible, with relatively short and free of any technical difficulty approaches. All of these factors make this range very popular among climbers and trekkers.

Huayna Potosi, despite being one of the seventh 6000ers in this mountain range, is certainly one of the most popular mountains in Cordillera Real among climbers. It is considered one of the less technical climbs in the Americas with a very easy approach to the base. Actually you can drive to base camp.

In this route we will drive back and forth from La Paz city to Huayna Potosi base camp; a 4WD journey that has been designed for those who would like to visit and enjoy great views of the mountain without needing to climb it.

Early in the morning we set off for the base camp of Huayna Potosi, known as Zongo platform. This natural viewpoint provides us with an excellent mountain panorama. En route we can stop off for various ideal “photo-opportunities”. There we will take a short walk along an aqueduct in order to get a better view of the valley, which opens out to the Yungas (mountain valley) of Zongo. Later our vehicle will drive us over the road pass to the west of Huayna Potosi bringing us into proximity with the impressive west face, that with its drop of almost a thousand meters; one of the biggest of the Cordillera Real. During the return journey to La Paz we will visit the Tuni-Condoriri reservoir with great views of the majestic Condoriri, which, with wings extended, resembles a Condoriri about to take flight.
