Mururata is also a mythological hero. A very old legend recounts that in times when there were no humans on the earth and only the mountains wandered over the highlands Mururata was the highest and most beautiful of the Andes. One day he contemplated his reflection in Lake Titicaca and his ego expanded to the extent that he wanted to be emperor of the earth. Wiracocha, the supreme god of the universe, did not take a liking to this rebellion so sent a warrior to behead him (his name literally means without head). Today we can see this mountain to the northwest of Illimani with its flattened top.

Skiing in Andes is not easy. Due to the altitude and high solar radiation, snowfields last little and glaciers are reseeding very fast, not mentioning the fact that the snow line starts at 5,000m (16,400 ft). But, do not get disappointed, this is a great arena where to practice mountaineering ski. The glacier of Mururata is one of the longest in Southern Cordillera Real, actually so long that the best way of getting to its summits is on Mountain Skis.

This itinerary has been designed for those who what to experience mountain ski in Cordillera Real. Please note that to take this trip alone, you must already be acclimatized to the highlands. This means that you must have spend at least 3-5 days at the highlands doing light physical activity and to have already climbed at least a couple of peaks of about 5,500m (18,040ft), ideally to have made the MECONDOR or MEJKOTA trips. For more information about this subject, please refer to the page acclimatization at our website.

This long day begins by crossing the residential areas of La Paz to then ascend to Animas pass from where we will have fantastic views of Illimani and Mururata mountains. This is an ideal place for an appreciation of the tectonic and erosive handiwork of nature. Later we will drive down into the Palca valleys and at Ventilla village take a secondary road leading to the Antenas located at the head-road over the northwestern slopes of Mururata. A short walk over rought terrain will take us to the glacier borders where we will put our skis (and skins) on to ascend as much as posible on the glacier towards to the summit. Despite some crevasses that we will “flag” on the way up, the descent is over a gentle gradient towards the same point where we got into the glacier. Later at the evening, we will retrace our steeps back to La Paz using the same route we used to get in.
