When traveling through this land you can easily understand the importance of Lake Titicaca in the origin of the Andean cultures, and that is particularly evident with the Tiwanacus.

Surrounded by desert like hills and snow caped mountains Lake Titicaca shores offered, and still offers, rich lands and a mild climate to local indigenous. Tiwanaco, the capital of the most important empire in the Andes used to be an important ceremonial center and a huge urban establishment.

Our route will take you first to Tiwanaco ruins and then towards the southern shores of Lake Titicaca. There are several short hikes planned to visit archeological pre-Hispanic ruins and be culturally transferred to the past as we pass by Aymara villages where Indians have been keeping their lifestyle for centuries.

Please note that to take this trip alone, you must already be acclimatized to the highlands. This means that you must have spent at least 1-2 days at the highlands. For more information about this subject, please refer to the page acclimatization at our website.

Itinerary:

D1. Transp.to Tiwanaco. Transp.to Patapatani. Camp.
D2. Trek to Kala-Uta ruins. Motor Boat to Pariti and Intja islands. Camp.
D3. Boat to Suriqui Island and Puerto Perez. Transp.to La Paz

Early in the morning we will drive to Tiwanaco for an illustrative and intensive tour through the ruins and the museums. After a short visit to the town, we will drive back to La Paz (El Alto) and from there to Puerto Perez at the southern shores of the lake. We will hike from this towards our campsite located on a beautiful country at the other side of the bay near Cumana village and great views of the peaks of “Cordillera Real”.
Day 2. Trek to Qwaya. Camp.

Today we will trek the length of the Peninsula admiring the Inca terraces, many of which are still used, passing through villages and walking along sandy beaches. Our objective is to reach the west end of the peninsula. Our route will take us first up to the top of the ridge that we will follow until it drops down again to the coast and continue over the road towards Qwaya. There we will camp outside of the village. Late at the evening we will pay a visit of Kala Uta (house of stones) archeological ruins.
Day 3. Motor boat to Puerto Perez. Transport to La Paz.

In the morning we will board our motor boat that will take us along the peninsula’s shores where reeds form a natural labyrinth that hosts many Andean bird species. On the way to Pariti island we will visit a small floating island, after a short visit to the new museum of this recently discovered archeological site, we will navigate towards Suriqui Island. There we will visit the famous reed boat makers of Lake Titicaca. Some of them have helped adventurers like Thor Hyerdahl, Kintín Muñoz and others to build the ships they used to attempt Trans oceanic expeditions. Late in the afternoon we will return on “open water” to Puerto Perez where our vehicle will be waiting to take us back to La Paz.
